care through coaches

Nadia Comaneci, Michael Jordan, Hershel Walker and Chipper Jones are among the elite athletes yet they all had coaches. The need for a coach is not defined by a weakness or lack of natural talent or ability. It’s right the opposite! A coach is that person who sees the individual’s unique ability from a different perspective. A coach sees someone’s blind spots and helps to remove them. It’s the most gifted that seek to become better. This reality is not only there for stellar athletes, but also for those who want to be counted among the elite of the human race as well. Consider this statement by the Honorable Leah J. Sears, Justice of the Supreme Court of Georgia, who succinctly puts our hesitancy in perspective as she quotes Nelson Mandela:

“And if you mistakenly believe that one person, making one significant change in his or her life, is inconsequential, then consider these words of Nelson Mandela: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that frightens us. You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn’t serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. You are born to make manifest the glory of God that is within you. It is not just in some of us, it is in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. “ Georgia Bar Journal, p. 89
